What to Check in a Roof Coating System Document
A product label is not a complete specification

A coating product data sheet describes a product. A complete roof system specification explains how the materials, substrate, preparation and details work together on a particular project.
Start with the Substrate
Confirm the existing membrane or roof assembly and any earlier coatings. Ask how compatibility and adhesion will be evaluated. Do not assume that a product approved for one roof type can be used on every roof.
Identify the applicable current manufacturer documents. Check their revision dates and whether a proposed substitution changes the system or its qualification.
Review the Whole Assembly
Look for cleaning and preparation requirements, repairs, primer selection, reinforcement and treatment of seams, edges, penetrations and drainage details. Ask how moisture or deteriorated components will be handled before application.
Confirm the specified application and finished-film requirements in writing. Generic figures from another product or project are not a substitute for the selected manufacturer's instructions.
Ask How Compliance Will Be Documented
- Record the approved products and any authorized substitutions.
- Identify weather, surface and curing limitations.
- Clarify the checks required during installation.
- Keep photographs and records required by the specification.
- Confirm inspections and qualification needed for the proposed warranty.
Question to Ask
Which current documents define this system, and what records will demonstrate that the completed work follows them?
Use the manufacturer's official resources and a roof-specific professional review. An educational material-family comparison does not establish product approval, stocked inventory or a final specification.
